This is our workhorse caddis pupa pattern we fish alongside our other select sub-surface flies. Like the Bird's Nest, it's one of our favorites to fish under an indicator as a lead fly or as a dropper off of a large hopper or stone.
The Tungsten Halo Pupa is a solid attractor style, sub-surface caddis pattern. It fishes in a variety of situations, on all types of rivers—freestones, tailwaters our high-mountain creeks. It's a fantastic cutthroat dropper on the Middle Fork of the Salmon. Just like the Bird's Nest Nymph, we fish this as a lead fly under a double nymph rig, or simply dropped off of a stonefly or foam hopper pattern in the late summer months. The Tungsten Halo Pupa gets down down quickly, has the right amount of flash and is super-buggy. It's a great option all year round.
